Rebecca was born in 1824 in Bolton.1  Rebecca's father was Thomas Allen and her mother was Elizabeth (Betty) Critchley. She had four brothers and a sister, named Thomas, William, Richard, John and Elizabeth.  She was the third oldest of the six children.
