John's father was Richard Allen and his mother was Rachel Knowles. He had four brothers and a sister, named Thomas, Thomas, Mathew, William and Betty.  He was the second oldest of the six children.  He died at the age of 66 in 1843 in Bolton.  He was buried on January 16th, 1843 at St. Mary (Deane).^2 3
