- Peter John “P.J.” Jurgens, 98 years of age, of Adams, died Saturday night, Dec. 15, 2007, at the Gold Crest Retirement Center in Adams. He was born on Aug. 23, 1909, at rural Adams, and attended Olney and Pleasant Hill Country School. He married Tena Jurgens on Nov. 26, 1931, at Zion Lutheran Church of rural Pickrell. They lived and farmed north of Filley until 1967, when they moved into Filley. He was a member of the American Lutheran Church of Filley and a former member of Zion Lutheran Church of Pickrell. He served on the church council and was a member of the Brotherhood. He was a member of the Farmers Union and on the board for Blue Rivers Area Agency on Aging. He served as the Mayor and was on the Filley Town Board for nine years. He enjoyed woodworking.
Survivors include two sons, Ernest Jurgens and his wife Janice of Adams and Harold Jurgens of Adams; two daughters, Alice Schlake and her husband Leland of Cortland and Lois Frohman of Filley; 24 grandchildren; one stepgrandchild; 45 great-grandchildren; 8 stepgreat-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Carline Mencl of Beatrice; five sisters-in-law, Lydia Jurgens of Adams, Elsie Parde, Ina Jurgens and Elizabeth Jurgens of Beatrice, and Irene Koch of Gretna; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Thee H. and Tina (Parde) Jurgens; his wife, Tena, who died on Sept. 26, 1998; two daughters, Arlene Stevens and Marian Bigalk; two sons-in-law, Ehme Stevens and Larry Frohman; three brothers, Heinrich, Henry and Wilfred Jurgens; and five sisters, Maria, Katie, Maria and Arina Jurgens and Thelma Trauernicht; and one great-grandson, Isaiah Jurgens.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2007, at the American Lutheran Church of Filley, with Pastor Melody Brindel officiating. Burial will be at the Zion Lutheran Cemetery of rural Pickrell. A family prayer service will be held at 1:15 p.m. on Wednesday in the fellowship room of the church. A memorial has been established to American Lutheran Church of Filley and Zion Lutheran Cemetery Association with Harold and Delores Huls in charge. The family will meet and greet friends from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday evening at Fox Funeral Home, 19th and Garfield streets, Beatrice. The body will lie in state until 10 a.m. Wednesday and then at the church one hour preceding the service.
