Auguste's father was Wilhelm (Henry) Carl Trauernicht and his mother was Catherine Bersche.  His paternal grandparents were Henry Trauernicht and Johanna Knobbe; his maternal grandparents were Louis Bersche and Anna Marie Moser. He had eight brothers and three sisters, and also a sibling of unknown gender, named Wilhelm, Johanne, Pa Heine, Theodore, Louis, Fred, Edward, Elizabeth, Anna, Catherine, Marie and Tenny.  He was the oldest of the thirteen children.
