Ivan Kern was born on September 7th, 1909 in Lexington, Scott, Indiana, USA.1   Ivan Kern's father was Dewit Wilton "Dee" Montgomery and his mother was Bertha Mae Fitch.  His paternal grandparents were Lorenzo Dow Montgomery and Mary Alice Guynn; his maternal grandparents are John Fitch and Martha. He had two brothers and a sister, named English Leo, Floyd and Helen. He had two half-brothers and four half-sisters, named Alvin Ruel, Rudy Walker, Pearl May, Lucy D., Alice O. "Tiny Grandma" and Selena C. "Lena".  He died at the age of 62 in 1971 in Richmond, Wayne, Indiana, USA.  He was buried in Earlham Cemetery.
