Robert's father was Harvey Houston and his mother was Orrelia Julian. He had three brothers and a sister, named William H., Milton, John Allen and Edith A.. He had three half-brothers and three half-sisters, named Madison Alexander, Benjamin Franklin, James M., Sarah, Martha A. "Mattie" and Thursa "Theresa".
