William's father is Edwin Gilpin and his mother is Margaret Layton.  His paternal grandparents are Richard Gilpin and Dortothy Thornborough; his maternal grandparents are Thomas Layton and Tunstall. He had two brothers and a sister, named Bernard, George and Ellinor.  He died about 1577 in Westmorland, England.  He was buried on January 23rd, 1577.1 1
