Martha was born in 1877 in Ohio, USA. Martha's father was Joshua Owens Gilbert and her mother was Hannah M. Phillips. Her maternal grandparents were Levi Phillips and Hannah Matilda Hallowell. She had three brothers and four sisters, and also a sibling of unknown gender, named Clayton, Boy, Henry, *Girl*, Edith , Loretta, Mary and Cora. She was the fifth oldest of the nine children.-
