Alexander was born on October 2nd, 1848 in Horkstow, Lincoln, England and his christening took place on October 12th, 1848 in Saint Maurice Church, Horkstow, Lincoln, England.  Alexander's father was John Stephenson Rack and his mother was Esther Mitchell.  His paternal grandparents were John Stephenson Rack and Mary Carr. He had a brother named Stephenson.  He was the older of the two children.
