Thomas was born in 1826 in Walthamstow, Essex, England and his baptism took place on May 20th, 1827 in St Marys Church, Walthamstow, Essex, England.  Thomas' father was Mr Frederick Taff and his mother was Mrs Hannah Thomas. He had four brothers named John, Frederick, Francis and Robert.  He was the youngest of the five children.
