Alan was born on September 5th, 1888 in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, India and his baptism took place there on November 3rd, 1888.  Alan's father was Mr Charles Edward Cline and his mother was Mrs Ellen Florence Josaphine Macleod.  His maternal grandparents were Mr Donald Macleod and Mrs Ann Catherine Heron.  He was an only child.
