Charles was born on September 18th, 1809 in Lummen.  Charles' father was Henry Stevens and his mother was Anne Elisabeth Gaethofs.  His maternal grandparents were Joannes Gaethofs and Helena Buntings. He had five brothers and four sisters, named Bernard, Charles, Charles, Alexander, Pierre, Marie Catharinne, Therese, Anne Marie and Caroline.  He was the youngest of the ten children.
