Mathias was born on May 26th, 1879 in Paal.¹ Mathias' father was Blankardus Gaethofs and his mother was Maria Constantina Put. His paternal grandparents were Pieter Joseph Gaethofs and Regina Milicina Volders. He had two brothers and three sisters, named Joseph Leonardus, Ferdinandus, Coletta, Regina and Maria Leonia. He was the third oldest of the six children. He died at just 15 days old on June 10th, 1879 in Paal.¹
