Richard was born on November 16th, 1920 in 443 Springfield Road, Belfast.1   Richard's father was Rev Richard Hodgett and his mother was Mary Elizabeth Kerr.  His paternal grandparents were Edward Hodgett and Mary; his maternal grandparents were Thomas Kerr and Sarah Hynds. He had a brother and three sisters, named David, Mary, Florence and Marienne.  He was the youngest of the five children.
