Carmel was born in 1921.  Carmel's father was William Edward Butler and her mother was Grace Nicholl.  Her maternal grandparents were Alexander Fergusson Nicholl and Elizabeth  Jessie Lloyd. She has a brother and two sisters, named Joseph, Bibiana and Robin.  She is the second oldest of the four children.
