Ian was born on August 28th, 1916. Ian's father was Robert Bruce Barboure and his mother was Flora Elizabeth Baker. His paternal grandparents were Matthew Barboure and Margaret Bruce; his maternal grandparents were Lionel John Baker and Wairoa Esther Bellshaw. He had five sisters named Margaret, Hetty, Joan, Flora and Jocelyn. He was the third oldest of the six children.
