Josefa was born in 1761.  Josefa's father was Capitán Nicolás Calisto (Alarcón) and her mother was Antonia Muñoz (Chiriboga).  Her paternal grandparents were Juan Calisto and Juana Aguilar; her maternal grandparents were Gral Antonio Muñoz and Antonia Sotomayor. She had a sister named Leonor.
