Thomas was born in 1840 in Idle Yorkshire.  Thomas' father was Joseph Heaton and his mother was Susanah Walton. He had six brothers and two sisters, named Henry, Philemon, Joseph, John, Thomas, William, Hannah and Grace.  He is the second youngest of the nine children.
