Alfred  was born in 1877 in Teffont Evias and his baptism took place there on October 7th, 1877.  Alfred 's father was Samuel Zacchaeus Penny and his mother was Martha Yates. He had three brothers and five sisters, named William, Frank, Charles, Kate, Fanny, Mary, Ellen and Ethel.  He is the fourth oldest of the nine children.
