Hugh Allen Kent

Hugh was born on February 22nd, 1839 in Swanmore. Hugh's father was Richard Kent and his mother is Charlotte Horner. His maternal grandparents were James Horner and Charlotte Stone. He had eight brothers and four sisters, named Richard, Walter, George, Charles, Alfred, Allen, Alfred, Athwick, Laura , Ellen, Emily and Emily. He was the sixth oldest of the thirteen children. He died at the age of 70 on September 16th, 1909 in Gresham, Multnomah, Oregon, U.S.A..

General Notes
- Hugh brought Eliza a freshly cut flower from his beautiful garden on a tray each morning with her breakfast tea. The family was living at 21 Berkeley St. in Bath, England, where Hugh was a Butler. Bath is famous for its hot springs and Roman Baths. The city is located 100 miles west of London in the rolling green beautiful Somerset countryside. Between 1885-1888 Hugh and Eliza decided to move the family, except for the oldest son Hugh Allen Kent, Jr., to Canada. Hugh Jr. lived at 21 Berkeley St. until his marriage in 1893. He was the only child out of nine living children to remain in England.
  
  "Hugh bought land in Winnipeg, Canada SIGHT UNSEEN. When the family arrived, Hugh was probably IMMEDIATELY depressed because it was prairie land. He sought the promise of the NEW WORLD and wanted to farm. Don't know why he picked Canada but maybe land like that was too cheap to believe!!
  
  Mary Louisa told the stories of LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE only it wasn't as neat as Laura Wilder!!! She said the kids had to walk to town to go to school and they had to cross railroad tracks to do so. Many times the trains would be moving and they would have to go under them...she had narrow escapes, being one the younger kids.
  
  She also told of the time when her mother made pies and put them on the windowsill and they saw INDIANS looking in!!! Guess she was a good cook!!!
  
  I think after Hugh decided a farmer's life was not for him, that he took a job in town. They moved in town during the winters because life on the prairie was very harsh." (Great Granddaughter-DR)
  
  Hugh and Eliza decided to move the family to San Francisco, CA by 1895. The climate should be more like England. Several of the children had married in Winnipeg, and I believe Frances and her husband John Percival may have been the first to move to San Francisco in 1894. Again, two other children were left behind. Amy Caroline was the only living child to remain in Canada, as well as Mable who was buried in Winnipeg in 1895.
  
  The family lived in San Francisco until sometime around 1903. The next move was to Oregon. Hugh died from heart failure in Oregon in 1909. He is buried in the Escobar Pioneer and Gresham Pioneer Cemetery in Gresham, Oregon.
