Edward was born in 1837 in Kennington, Surrey and his christening took place on October 18th, 1837 in Lambeth.  Edward's father was Edward Moss Dimmock and his mother was Mary Ann Jackson.  His paternal grandfather was Moss Dimmock and his paternal grandmother is Sarah Bentley; his maternal grandfather was Thomas Jackson and his maternal grandmother is Ann Tucker. He had two brothers and six sisters, named Edward, Edgar, Rosa, Harriet, Clara, Louisa, Adelaide and Blanche.  He is the sixth oldest of the nine children.
