Benjamin was born in 1886 in Chideock.  Benjamin's father is Eli Burton and his mother was Sarah Ann Clarke Sansom.  His maternal grandparents are William Sansom and Ann Clarke. He had five brothers and two sisters, named John, Robert , Fred, Albert, Edward, Elizabeth  and Harriet.  He is the sixth oldest of the eight children.
