Barend was born on July 2nd, 1852 in Alkmaar.1  Barend's father was Jan Koeman (gasstoker) and his mother was Neeltje Munnik (de).  His paternal grandparents were Dirk Jans Koeman (Tuinman, opzichter Remonstrantse begraafplaats) and Cornelia Christina Goedzijt; his maternal grandparents were Barend Munnik (de) (touwslager) and Maria Struijk (Struik) (naaister). He had seven brothers and four sisters, named <Unknown>, Dirk Adrianus, Barend, Johannes Adrianus, Hendrik, Cornelis Adrianus, Adrianus, Cornelia Christina Maria, Maria Catharina, Diena Elisabeth and Dina Elisabeth.  He was the second oldest of the twelve children.  He died at 4 months old on November 16th, 1852 in Alkmaar.2
