Sophie's father was Francis Frederick of_Saxe-Coburg and her mother was Augusta Reuss-Ebersdorf.  Her paternal grandparents were Ernest Frederick of_Saxe-Coburg and Sophia Antonia of_Brunswick; her maternal grandparents were Henry_XXIV Reuss-Ebersdorf and Caroline Erbach-Schonberg.  She is the sixth of seven children.  She had three brothers and three sisters, named Ernest_I of_Saxe-Coburg- Saalfeld, Ferdinand, Leopold_I George of_Saxe-Coburg, Victoria Mary Louisa, Antoinette and Julie.
