Marie was born in 1852.  Marie's father was Alexander of_Hesse and_the_Rhine and her mother was Julia of_Battenberg von_Hauke.  Her paternal grandparents were Louis_II of_Hesse and_the_Rhine and Wilhelmina of_Baden; her maternal grandparents were John Maurice von_Hauke and Sophie la_Fontaine.  She was the oldest of five children.  She had four brothers named Louis of_Battenberg, Alexander of_Bulgaria, Henry Maurice of_Battenberg and Francis Joseph.  She died at the age of 71 in 1923.
