Maria da Conceição's father was João Freitas Morna and her mother was Rosa Fernandes.  Her paternal grandparents were José de Freitas Morna and Carolina de Jesus; her maternal grandparents were  Francisco Fernandes de Gouveia and  Augusta de Jesus.  She is the fourth of five children.  She has three brothers and a sister, named Luis de , José de, João de  and Angelina.
