João de 's father was João Freitas Morna and his mother was Rosa Fernandes.  His paternal grandparents were José de Freitas Morna and Carolina de Jesus; his maternal grandparents were  Francisco Fernandes de Gouveia and  Augusta de Jesus.  He is the third of five children.  He has two brothers and two sisters, named Luis de , José de, Maria da Conceição and Angelina.
