José Avelino's father is Dr José Avelino and his mother is Maria Diva  Andrade Freitas Morna.  His maternal grandparents were  Julio Aleixo Freitas Morna and  Maria do Patrocinio Andrade.  He is the oldest of two children.  He has a brother named Rui.
