Martin was born on February 8th, 1816 in Kackenberg, Germany.  Martin's father was Johann Martin Helsper and his mother was Catharina Hoen.  His paternal grandparents were Johann Martin Helsper and Eva Heidrig. He had two brothers and four sisters, named Wilhelm, Johann, Anna, Eva, Margarethe and Katharina.  He was the fourth oldest of the seven children.  He died at the age of 76 on June 5th, 1892 in Kackenberg, Germany.
