William was born on September 20th, 1886 in Fort Calhoun, NE.1   William's father was John Wolf Gropper and his mother was Henrietta Stephen.  His paternal grandparents were Hans Hinrich Gropper II and Margaretha Charlotte Schroder. He had five brothers and five sisters, named Fred, John, Emil, Herman, Ernest, Minnie, Annie, Emma, Alvena and Clara.  He was the fifth oldest of the eleven children.  He died at the age of 79 on February 4th, 1966.
