Simon was born on December 7th, 1935. Simon's father was Jan Hendrik Hofmeyr van Blerk and his mother was Anna Hendrika Gersbach. His paternal grandparents were Simon Petrus van Blerck and Maria Wilhelmina Joubert. He has two brothers and a sister, named Hendrik, Jan and Elizabeth. He is the second oldest of the four children.
