Jan was born in 1820.  Jan's father was Petrus Jacobus van Blerk and his mother is Maria Susanna Joubert.  His paternal grandparents were Jan  Barend van Blerk and Maria Catharina van den Berg. He had three brothers and a sister, named Francois, Petrus , Hendrik and Maria.  He was the second oldest of the five children. He had a half-brother named Jan.  Jan is no longer alive.
