Frederick was born on December 9th, 1874.  Frederick's father was Hendrik Stephanus van Blerk and his mother was Helena Petronella Gericke.  His paternal grandfather was Petrus Jacobus van Blerk and his paternal grandmother is Maria Susanna Joubert. He had four brothers and a sister, named Hendrik, George, Johan, Eagon and Anna.  He was the second youngest of the six children.
