Prior was born on May 18th, 1856.  Prior's father was John McClelland Jordan and his mother was Matilda S. Holder.  His paternal grandfather was John Jordan and his paternal grandmother is Charlotte McClelland; his maternal grandparents were William Pryor Holder and Emily Elizabeth Jordan. He had five brothers and eight sisters, named William, Charles, Thomas, Henry, George, Mary, Rebekah, Charolty (Lottie), Matilda, Elizer, Martha, Emily and Lydia.  He was the third oldest of the fourteen children.
