DROWNED IN RIVER
Clark Fork claims victim in Joe Mulvihill a young man of Cabinet.
Sank while in swimming
Body found three hours later and heroic effort made to resuscitate life - burial at Rathdrum.

Joe Mulvihill, aged 18, a son of Michael Mulvihill, one of the best known citizens of the east end of the county, was drowned in the Clark Fork river at Cabinet Sunday evening while bathing.  There is a sand spit in the river at Cabinet and young Mulvihill, Morris Burke and a young man by the name of Ott were companions in swimming.  The water eddies back from the river and the sand spit is at the mouth of the mountain stream, and the water at the point where the young man lost his life is extremely cold at all seasons of the year.

Mulvihill’s companions stated that Mulvihill made no outcry.  They saw him come up and sink twice, the last time going entirely from view. The water was about eight feet deep.  The young fellows with Mulvihill gave the alarm after he sank and did not reappear and the body was found about 25 minutes after the drowning..  A futile effort was made to resuscitate the young man and the body was rolled on a barrel and worked over for fully three hours before hope was finally given up. The supposition is that Mulvihill was taken with a cramp in the cold water and that he was over heated when he went in.  The young man was well liked and well known and he leaves a father and mother and several brothers and sisters.

E. A. Allen was in the city from Cabinet Monday on his way to Rathdrum to make arrangements for the funeral which occurred from the Catholic church at Rathdrum Tuesday morning.
