Coling's father was Frederick William Parkinson and his mother was Emily Mabel Taylor.  His maternal grandparents were Charles Frederick Taylor and Elizabeth Jane Skewes. He has two brothers and three sisters, named Allen, Geoffrey, Joan, Alma and Hilda.
