Janet was born on August 5th, 1813.  Janet's father was Alexander Bethune and her mother was Ann Matheson.  Her paternal grandfather was Alexander Bethune and her paternal grandmother is Margaret Miller; her maternal grandfather was Colin Matheson and her maternal grandmother is Unknown. She had four brothers and a sister, named Donald, Elspet, William, Alexander and Margaret.  She was the oldest of the six children. She had two half-brothers named Alexander and Allan .  She died at the age of 45 in 1858.
