Her paternal grandparents are Gonçalo Esteves Zarco and Brites de Santarém; her maternal grandfather is Rodrigo Lopes de Sequeiros. She had three brothers and four sisters, named Garcia Rodrigues da, Ruy Gonçalves da, João Gonçalves da, Isabel Gonçalves da, Beatriz, Catarina and Helena Gonçalves da. She is the third youngest of the eight children.
