Hugh was born on October 5th, 1800 in Kilmore,Argyllshire, Scotland.  Hugh's father was Donald Beaton and his mother was Rachel Patterson.  His paternal grandparents were Angus Beaton and Ann McGilvray. He had a brother and three sisters, named John, Marjory, Catherine and Mary.  He was the oldest of the five children.
