James was born in 1852 in Clackmannan.1   James' father was Henry Allan and his mother was Devina Cook.  His paternal grandparents were James Allan and Elizabeth Hynd; his maternal grandparents were Robert Cook and Isabella Fyfe. He had two brothers and two sisters, named Robert, Henry, Isabella  and Elspeth.  He was the oldest of the five children.
