David was born in 1834.  David's father is John Nicolson and his mother is Janet Manson.  His paternal grandparents are David Nicolson and Elizabeth Smith.  He has two brothers and three sisters, named William, John, Christina, Elizabeth and Janet.  He is the oldest of the six children.
