John was born in 1882.  John's father was Alexander Mowat and his mother was Benjamina Dunnet.  His paternal grandparents were Alexander Mowat and Mary Lyall.  He had two brothers and three sisters, named Alexander, Sinclair, Mary, Margaret and Mary.  He was the second oldest of the six children.
