Jane was born in 1885.  Jane's father was Thomas Mowat and her mother was Elizabeth Bruce.  Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Mowat and Janet Donaldson.  She had four brothers and three sisters, named Thomas, Robert, William, John, Jessie, Elizabeth and Marjory.  She was the fifth oldest of the eight children.
