Jane was born in 1841.  Jane's father was George MacKenzie and her mother was Susannah Taylor.  Her paternal grandparents were Marcus MacKenzie and Margaret Forbes; her maternal grandparents were William Taylor and Jean Forbes.  She had four brothers and two sisters, named Hothum, Marcus, William, Thomas, Margaret and Catherine.  She was the third oldest of the seven children.
