Janet was born in 1838.  Janet's father was Robert Campbell and her mother was Elizabeth MacKay.  Her paternal grandparents were John Campbell and Isabella Sutherland; her maternal grandparents were John MacKay and Janet MacKay.  She had three brothers and three sisters, named William, John, Robert, Jane, Isabel and Margaret.  She was the fourth oldest of the seven children.
