Alexander was born in 1880.  Alexander's father was Alexander Bain and his mother was Helen Sutherland.  His paternal grandparents were William Bain and Margaret Sutherland; his maternal grandparents are William Sutherland and Marjory Sutherland.  He had two brothers and three sisters, named William, Robert, Marjory, Hellen and Johan.  He was the youngest of the six children.  He had a half-brother and a half-sister, named John and Cathrine.
