Walter was born in 1908.  Walter's father was Walter Thomson and his mother was Betsy MacDonald.  His paternal grandparents were Walter Thomson and Christina Lawson; his maternal grandparents were Malcolm MacDonald and Betsy McKinnon.  He had a brother and a sister, named Malcolm and Elizabeth Margaret.  He was the second oldest of the three children.
