Janet was born in 1834.  Janet's father was Walter Thomson and her mother was Margaret Penman.  Her paternal grandparents were Walter Thomson and Isabella Coldstream.  She had two brothers and two sisters, named Walter, Alexander, Isabel and Christian.  She was the youngest of the five children.
