David was born in 1874.  David's father was David Thomson and his mother is Janet Crichton.  His paternal grandparents were Walter Thomson and Jane Adamson; his maternal grandparents are William Crichton and Elizabeth Leitch.  He has four brothers and four sisters, named Walter, William, Robert, Alexander, Elizabeth, Jane, Janet and Catherine.  He is the third oldest of the nine children.
