John was born in 1836.  John's father was John Mowat and his mother was Barbara MacKay.  His paternal grandfather is Andrew Mowat and his paternal grandmother was Mary Begg; his maternal grandparents were John MacKay and Janet Sinclair.  He had three brothers and two sisters, named Andrew, Alexander, James, Janet and Mary.  He was the third oldest of the six children.
